The VAIS is considering several options to continue students' immersion learning after 5th grade. We are consulting with other districts that are in the planning stages for middle and high school as their first immersion students entered 5th grade this fall. One idea is to add middle school grades to VAIS. Another recommendation is to have an "immersion track" in an existing middle school. In other words, immersion students would be taught one core content subject (e.g., math or science) in Chinese, along with a high-level Chinese language class. These students' other classes would be in English with their non-immersion peers. In high school, this same model could be adopted with either 1 or 2 courses taught in Chinese. We will determine the best way to continue immersion education in middle and high school based on the experiences of these other immersion schools.
